CSD Spelling Bee Champion Mallory Greene had a great first day at the Scripps National Spelling Bee! Mallory successfully completed the first three rounds of competition yesterday to make it to today's quarterfinal round. She correctly spelled "muesli" in round one and then answered a word meaning question that asked her to identify another word that means "inimical." (In case you were wondering, the answer is "hostile.") In round three, Mallory correctly spelled "plygain." Mallory has advanced farther in this competition than any previous CSD student, and we wish her the best of luck today! The quarterfinal round is airing on the ion television network beginning at 8 a.m. today.

The Clover Middle School (CMS) All-Stars took the field this morning for a Unified Softball game. Unified sports enable students with and without disabilities to socialize and engage in physical activity. The CMS team was mentored by members of the school's Softball Team. Each player was featured in an All-Star banner posted on the backstop fence. Unified softball was funded by a 2023 teacher innovation grant from the Clover LEAF Foundation

Fifth graders at Larne Elementary showcased their personal and academic growth during the past year in a Leadership Showcase. The showcase preceded the school’s annual Fifth Grade Awards Ceremony. Students delivered short presentations to demonstrate their fifth grade journey. Many talked about their improvement in writing, math or science classes, detailing specific curriculum concepts. Others discussed performance in extracurricular activities, like sports, dance or art. All reflected on their progress and areas for improvement as they enter middle school in the fall. The students also thanked friends, teachers and family members who helped them in their journey. They shared this information in electronic or tri-fold displays featuring photos, certificates, medals and other forms of recognition. The Leadership Showcase was held to mark the end of Larne’s first year as a Leader in Me School.

Christopher Hansen, a senior at Clover High School, has been named a National Merit Scholar. Christopher was one of just 2,500 students from across the country to earn the prestigious honor. Scholars are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors from a pool of National Merit Finalists. Finalists are selected on the basis of their performance on both the PSAT and SAT, as well as their contributions to and leadership in school and community activities. Finalists have also received a letter of recommendation from a high school official. Christopher will use his National Merit Scholarship to attend the University of South Carolina in the fall. He was recognized for his accomplishment at Monday night’s School Board meeting.
